Hair loss treatments: Vitamin A, E or biotin could help boost hair growth

Hair loss treatments can often be hit and miss. However, mounting evidence shows certain vitamins and nutrients may be important for hair growth. What are three of the best vitamins to help with hair regrowth?

Biotin

One of the best-known vitamins for hair regrowth is said to be a B-vitamin known as biotin.

Experts have linked a biotin deficiency with hair loss in humans.

Although biotin is used as an alternative hair-loss treatment, those who are deficient have the best results.

Other B-vitamins help create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles. These processes are important for hair growth.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A helps skin glands to produce sebum, which can moisturise the scalp and keep hair healthy.

Men are recommended to have 900mcg of vitamin A daily, while women need 700mcg.

The NIH(National Institutes of Health) confirmed vitamin A is available in multivitamins and as a stand-alone supplement.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and has demonstrated hair boosting potential in clinical research.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, in Malaysia, conducted an experiment on patients with alopecia.

Thirty-seven participants suffering from hair loss were recruited for the study.

Twenty-one of them were randomly assigned to receive 100mg of vitamin E daily, while 17 were assigned a placebo supplementation.

They were monitored for the number of hairs in a pre-determined scalp area, as well as the weight of 20 strands of 1cm in length before supplementation.

These were monitored again at four months and then again at eight months.

The study found that those who had taken vitamin E supplementation had more hairs than the placebo group by the end of the experiment.

Specifically, by month eight, the vitamin E group saw an increase of 34.5 percent of hair, whereas the placebo group had 0.1 percent increase in hairs.

Other hair loss treatments

Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness, recommended by the NHS.

Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness, but women shouldn’t use finasteride.

But it’s important to know these treatments don’t work for everyone and may only work for as long as they’re used.

They also aren’t available on the NHS and can be expensive.

Other ways to treat hair loss include a hair transplant – when hair cells are moved to thinning patches – and tattooing, when tattoos are used to look like short hair and eyebrows.

If your hair loss is causing you distress, speak to your GP who may be able to help you get some counselling.
